The Animas runs right through Durango. Raft the whitewater in early summer, float the gentle stretches with the kids, or watch the historic Durango & Silverton narrow-gauge railroad rumble across its bridges. In town, the Animas River Trail follows the water for miles of easy walking and biking.

The closest adventure to the cabin. This reservoir has a real swimming beach, boat and paddleboard launches, and open water for kayaking. Just five minutes down the road, it's an easy morning swim or an all-day outing when the weather's warm.

Hiking & the creek

Start on the cabin's own 9 wooded acres, then venture out. Clear mountain creeks are made for wading on hot afternoons, and trailheads across the San Juans range from gentle forest loops to alpine climbs. The high country opens up as the snow melts each spring.

Fly fishing

The Animas and the nearby tailwaters are Gold Medal trout country. Bring your waders and a fly rod or book a local guide — brown and rainbow trout are within a short drive, and the scenery alone is worth the trip.
