The Animas runs right through Durango. Raft the whitewater in early summer, float the gentle stretches with the kids, or watch the historic Durango & Silverton narrow-gauge railroad rumble across its bridges. In town, the Animas River Trail follows the water for miles of easy walking and biking.
The closest adventure to the cabin. This reservoir has a real swimming beach, boat and paddleboard launches, and open water for kayaking. Just five minutes down the road, it's an easy morning swim or an all-day outing when the weather's warm.
Main Avenue is a walkable stretch of Victorian storefronts, breweries, coffee roasters, and farm-to-table restaurants. Time your visit for the summer festivals and the 4th of July, when the whole town turns out. It's the perfect rest day between adventures.

The Animas and the nearby tailwaters are Gold Medal trout country. Bring your waders and a fly rod or book a local guide — brown and rainbow trout are within a short drive, and the scenery alone is worth the trip.
